October 7, 2008 SAS Technology Meeting

Agenda and Minutes
1. Laptop initiative: Lengthy discussing for upcoming tasks. (3 hours) (Andy)
2. Internet Safety: How we get in front of it. (Andy)
3. Student email lists: We need to compile a comprehensive list of all the addresses. (Don)
4. Power School: Where are we and what can be done to make the introduction a smooth one. (Andy)
5. Infrastructure: Updates on a schedule for work so that teachers can be given a lot of advance notice. (Andy)
6. Atomic Learning: Examining the possibility of putting in place just-in-time training as well as a sustainable program of professional development in Technology with streamed video training. Visiting the site below as well as familiarizing yourself with the content in the Power Point presentation attached to the email before our meeting will help further discussions. Atomic Learning - For $8000 we can get every student, parent and teacher signed up to Atomic Learning. As we move into the 1:1 era, this will be another resource for our entire educational community to assist with Just In Time learning. There are excellent screencast tutorials on tons of pieces of software.
Action: Andy will put in a purchase order with the contact he made at Learning 2.008.
Infrastructure Update - All four vendors are presenting tomorrow and a recommendation will be made for the company next week. The project should begin November 15 after the Board approves the company. Puxi HS will be priority and then a crew will be assigned to each campus to get the wiring done.
Technology Plan - We are behind when it comes to tech integration at SAS. As a TECH TEAM we must have buy-in from the parents and must consistently and frequently communicate the tech plan and it's current initiatives.

Future Work Force: Lack of future readiness of the US workforce is due to low High Tech Skills.
Give them the tools they need to learn and grow
We live in a connected world... but more importantly our kids emerge into a changed world
Laptops: The most powerful integrated learning tool ever. Web 2.0 Online Learning Environments. Higher Levels of Learning. Research says increased ability to compete in Higher Ed and the Workforce
Studies: Laptop Students are Better Writers. Students write more, research more and edit more aggressively. Laptops encourage collaboration among students. Students are more confident in their computer skills. Students report increased pride in their work and motivates them to work longer and harder.
Laptop teachers showed significant change toward teaching practices... putting students at the center of learning, used discussion rather than lecture, encouraged student led inquiry, emphasized thinking skills.
Recommendations: Year 1: 7-10. Year 2: 6-11. Year 3: 6-12 with possible 5.
Recommendations: LCD and Sound 2009. Document Cameras 2010. Digital Whiteboards 2011.
Recommendations: Get the laptops into the hands of the teachers immediately. EVERY teacher, counselor pk-12, and ed. administrator
Recommendations: Adopt Mac.... cost is less, training is provided at ALL levels of our organization ... assist with repairs... Macs integrate multimedia software... works with PowerSchool... works with Office.
Recommendations: Fund Laptops through Tuition based Fees. This means 50% of the parents will not be affected by fees.
Recommendations: Fund a full time TRF again on each campus. Reform support model for each division. Additional Help Desk support on both campuses.
We spent 3 hours working on the tech plan - it's in Andy's hands now.....
Internet Safety Guidelines:
Details off campus meeting information for students should not be posted to any blog. For example, it's okay to say we will be going to this place soon. It's not okay to say, we will be at this place at 1:20 on Monday.
Teachers should always use the given naming convention when creating any internet accounts for students. For example, andrew01px2015.
Never assume privacy of any forum at SAS
Andy to create a document for information for all about AUP, Blog Standards (safety, blogroll, posting standards around links, tags, comments), PowerSchool, Moodle, the demise of Edline,
Andy will get the staff AUP out to teachers within the next two weeks.
Andy will check to see if there are any kids on the non-photo list.
Don will create a Terms of Use for each webpage/blog/portal etc....
Amanda will bet her gmail lists on the nerd drive asap for Don.
